In 1972 the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was created to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service through voluntary testing and certification. These technicians and automotive service professionals are tested on one specialty area and have a documented two years of relative work experience. In the United States, there are over 385,000 ASE certified professionals.
